MAPLE HEIGHTS 1975 AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AGREEMENT REGARDING MAPLE HEIGHTS SCHOOLS

Mr. Frank Russell Ross, author of "Soul Dancing! The Essential African American Cultural Dance Book", and chief negotiator of this historic document, was kind enough to make copies for us.

There is an "important distinction between affirmative action and equal opportunity. Equal opportunity assumes that the concept of merit based solely upon a person’s perceived ability to perform job duties will exclusively govern all personnel decisions. Committment to affirmative action requires specific efforts to recruit, employ, and promote members of groups previously excluded by consideration of additional factors deemed to be relevant and important.*"

Read an excellent article about Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. [makes reference to affirmative action]
